As you may have gathered by looking at either past posts or our website, we’re passionate about adding beauty and value to homes in our area. Sometimes this is done through quality building and remodeling, or by applying beautiful new interior or exterior paint to fortify and protect your surfaces. At the same time, however, investing in other strategic home maintenance activities will also pay a large dividend down the road.
With early summer in full swing, we thought we’d share a few maintenance ideas that will benefit your property. For topics that are specific to adding “wow factor” and marketability, take a look at our previous post: Home Improvement Ideas That Will Increase Your Property’s Curb Appeal.
4 Home Maintenance Ideas
- Keep an eye out for damaged or leaking gutters – Your gutter system has the crucial job of drawing water away from your home. This drastically cuts down on the risk of leaks in your basement, around windows, or in your crawl space. Check for clogs or damaged sections where water may either find a point of escape or become trapped and overflow.
- Look for the early stages of wood rot – Rot can become a fast-growing problem if left unchecked. Using a screwdriver, look for soft wood around windows and doors especially. Finding the problem quickly and investing in quality repairs will save you from a huge headache down the road!
- Air conditioning maintenance – Whether you hire a professional or take on the project yourself, cleaning your filters and coils will help your unit to run more smoothly and efficiently.
- Fill low areas – Do you have a deep dip in the lawn near your house? You may want to have it filled with compacted soil. Not only will this cut down on trapped water and flooding when it rains, but it also will remove a breeding ground for insects (you’ll thank yourself on a mosquito-free summer evening!).
Bonus Idea: How about a Fun, Summertime DIY Project?
How about repurposing an old toy wagon into a mobile planter for herbs and flowers? With the right patina this could either be a retro, chic decoration, or just a fun project with the kids or grandkids.
