Hardwood Flooring Project in Westchester County NY

November 20, 2013

Hardwood floors in a home are very aesthetically pleasing. There are many different finishes,  multiple colors to choose from, and hardwood floors also come in different styles, such as plank or parquet.

Hardwood floors makes it much easier to clean and maintain. You can clean it by simply sweeping, mopping, and occasionally using wood floor cleaners. Overtime, as the floor becomes worn with scuffs and scratches, hardwood floors can be easily refinished to perfection again. Hardwood flooring is also extremely durable. You might often find older homes with original hardwood flooring.

Below are some pictures of a recent hardwood flooring and painting project we completed.

When Is The Best Time To Remodel

January 19, 2012

Most people think of spring and summer as the perfect time to undertake a remodeling project. It is quite true that warmer temperatures and sunny days are beneficial when it comes to working outside – or rather hiring other people to work outside – but temperature is far from the only consideration when deciding when is the right time to begin your remodeling project.

In many cases, knowing when to remodel is likely to save you money as well as time during your project. Spring and summer may be the most popular times to call in a contractor but they may not be the right option for you.

Avoiding Contractors’ Busy Times

If you go to your favorite restaurant when they are very busy you are unlikely to get the same careful level of attention as you would at off peak hours and you are far less likely to get the extra side portion of salad dressing or any other extras you want the first time you ask for it. The staff are simply going to be too busy to give you all the attention they probably should.

The same can often hold true for renovation or remodeling contractors of all kinds. If they are juggling several projects at once they may simply not have the resources or time to pay as much attention to yours, especially if it a smaller project, as they usually would if they were less pressed for time.

Additionally, when every contractor within a ten mile radius is putting in orders for hardwood flooring, paint, lumber and all kinds of other building supplies there is a much greater chance that orders will suffer stock shortages, get delayed, or even mixed up, causing everyone involved extra headaches. Remodeling projects are already a bit of a hassle anyway so these types of extra delays can become a real annoyance.

By working with remodeling contractors in their “off season” you may also get a more favorable to you price estimate as when they have less projects on their books.

The best possible scenario for many remodeling and home maintenance projects is to schedule them a few months earlier than everyone else is likely to be doing.

Using Tiles To Create A Magnificent Bathroom

August 11, 2011

In earlier decades people didn’t consider the decoration of their bathroom too much. If it looked clean and hygienic then it served its purpose. Highly decorated bathrooms seemed to be set aside for high class restaurants or the rich and famous. Most people would just put up with an old avocado green bathroom suite with matching textured tiles, which were seemingly the only tile design available in those previous decades as they were everywhere! These days we want our bathroom to make more of a statement and what better way than with sparkly galaxy tiles.

Granite tiles are available in a wide range of styles and colors, but a favorite are galaxy granite tiles. They are available in a variety of sizes including mosaic tiles, which can be used to create a frieze effect which could contrast perfectly with the larger galaxy granite tiles. The mosaic tiles come in sheets of around 300mm square which makes them very easy to apply. Each sheet can be trimmed to make them even more versatile.

Galaxy tiles are a type of granite tile, they can be very dark brown or black which feature a myriad of gold or silver flecks giving the appearance of a galaxy full of stars. These granite tiles definitely have an interesting look and when used correctly, can work well in any sized bathroom. After read many bathroom design guides and many state that dark tiles in smaller bathrooms made the space feel too small, however this is not always true. Dark tiles with a white grout create a very definite grid pattern which gives the illusion of more space, and using galaxy granite tiles draws the eye deeper in, almost beyond the grout, further enhancing the illusion of more space.

If you’re not convinced that dark granite tiles are the best choice for your bathroom, sparkly tiles are also available in a wide variety of other colors too. Whether you choose white, cream, green or blue, they’ll all make your bathroom the envy of your friends and family. You don’t have to stick with the boring standard white or off white grout as some beautiful effects can be created using different colored grouts. For example, imagine cream sparkly tiles with a darker earthy grout applied between them, or blue sparkly tiles with a brighter, paler blue grout which will draw out the blue flecks in each tile. Whatever style of tile you choose, feel free to mix and match full size and mosaic tiles together with a creative grout, to create a stunning and unique bathroom design.

Front Porch Restoration

July 18, 2011

Gerety Building and Restoration has recently completed a porch restoration from a home that we have been restoring in Westchester, NY. The front porch was completely reconstructed using Aeratis Traditions PVC porch flooring. The flooring was selected because of its traditional historical design and durability. The Aeratis flooring is resistant to termites and mold and it is paint ready. Synthetic Trademark Reserve wood was also used for the railing.
